Raiya Magazine
Rai·ya /’rī-yə/
noun
- The Shepherd or Guardian Derived from the Arabic rā‘ī, referring to one who tends, protects, and guides. In the context of our inquiry, it represents the duty to safeguard the narratives of creatives from being flattened by external gazes.
- The Visionary From the root ra’ah, meaning to see, perceive, or provide insight. It denotes a refusal to look only at the surface, choosing instead to witness the nuances of human labour.
- The People (The Commons) Historically, a term for the subjects or the collective members of a community (reaya). It reflects our commitment to the voices in the margins — a collective heartbeat rather than the singular headlines of the state.
- The Banner A standard or flag (rāyah). A symbol used to mark a territory of thought. We use it to signal a site of inquiry that archives culture on its own terms.
We don't report; we inquire. Raiya was founded to reclaim the narrative of the artisan from the shadows of political tragedy. Through digital storytelling, we document the labour of our people to build a living archive. We aren't here to explain our culture to the world. We are here to report it on our own terms.
